How to Layer Necklaces: Lengths, Chokers and Pendants
Share
Layering necklaces comes down to one idea: give each chain its own space. Different lengths, one focal piece and a few matching details do most of the work.
Necklace lengths, in plain terms
Lengths are a convention, and they vary a little from brand to brand, so use these as rough guides. Check each product page for the real length of the piece.
- Choker: sits close at the base of the neck, roughly 14 to 16 inches.
- Collarbone: rests at or just below the collarbone, roughly 16 to 18 inches.
- Longer: hangs lower on the chest, from about 20 inches and up.
How to layer necklaces
- Start with the shortest. Put on the choker or the closest chain first, then add longer ones below it.
- Leave a gap. A couple of inches between lengths keeps chains from sitting on top of each other.
- Pick one focal piece. One pendant or one chunky chain leads, and the rest stay simple.
- Mix textures. A thick chain with a thin one, or a plain chain with a pendant, reads as layered instead of repeated.
- Keep the finish consistent, gold-tone with gold-tone or silver-tone with silver-tone, or mix on purpose.
A layered look to try
- The close one: the Pearl Choker, a chunky gold-tone curb chain with a front emblem framed by pearl-look beads, at choker length.
- The middle: the Paperclip Necklace, a gold-plated chain of elongated links that is light enough to layer.
- The lucky one: the Horseshoe Pendant Necklace, a stainless steel box chain with a horseshoe-shaped closure at the front.

How to keep necklaces from tangling
Fasten each chain before you put the next one on. Store them separately, hanging or flat in a pouch, and don't toss them together in one box. Take them off before showering, swimming or exercising. More in our care guide.
Frequently asked questions
How many necklaces can you layer?
Two or three is a good start. Add a fourth only if each chain still has its own space.
Can you layer a choker with other necklaces?
Yes. A choker is a good first layer, because it sits above everything else. Keep the chains below it thinner or lighter.
Can you layer charm necklaces?
Yes. Let one charm necklace be the focal point and keep the others plain. See our guide to charms for bracelets and necklaces.
