How Many Charms on a Bracelet? How to Build a Charm Bracelet
Share
A charm bracelet is a bracelet that carries small hanging pieces, each one picked for a reason: a shape you like, a place, a person or a lucky symbol. There is no required number of charms. What decides it is the length of the bracelet, the size of the charms and how much you want on your wrist. This guide is about planning the bracelet. For how to attach a charm, see our guide to charms for bracelets and necklaces.
How many charms should a bracelet have?
As a rule of thumb, leave a little chain showing between charms so they hang freely and don't pile up. On a bracelet of about 6.5 to 7 inches, that usually means a handful of small charms or two to four bigger ones. It is a style guide, not a limit. Start with one to three and add more once you see how they hang.
Our Heart & Pearl Bracelet is a good example of a full one. It has a star, two pearl-look beads, a heart with a pink stone, a four-leaf clover, a small clear stone and a round letter-style charm on a silver-tone chain, with a lobster clasp and an extender chain to adjust the fit.
Fixed charms or charms you add?
- Fixed: the charms are already on the bracelet, like the Heart & Pearl Bracelet. You wear it as it comes.
- Add-on: a charm with a loop or a clasp that you hang yourself. The Heart Gem Charm has a gold loop on top for easy hanging.
Each charm has its own loop size, so check the page. If you aren't sure whether a charm fits a particular chain, ask us before you order.
Choose a theme
A theme keeps a bracelet from looking random. A few that work:
- Colors: the Gummy Bear Charm comes in 10 combinations of silver and gold tones with black, fuchsia, green, orange or blue accents.
- Nature: the Butterfly Charm has green and lilac tones on a gold-tone butterfly.
- Luck: the Lucky Soul Charm is a horseshoe in green and blue enamel.
- One finish: keep every charm gold-tone or silver-tone for a cleaner look, or mix both on purpose.
Balance size and weight
Mix one larger charm with a couple of small ones. On our pages, the Heart Gem Charm is 15 mm and the Lucky Soul Charm is 24 mm. A 24 mm charm is a lot to hang on a fine chain, so check how thick the chain is before you add a big one. More charms means more weight, and a thin chain will pull and twist.
What do charm bracelets mean?
Whatever you decide. Many people add a charm for a date, a trip, a gift or a person, and the bracelet becomes a record over time. You can also pick charms only because you like how they look.
Caring for a charm bracelet
Small details collect lotion and perfume, so put your bracelet on last, wipe it with a soft cloth and store it flat and dry. Take it off before showering, swimming or exercising. More in our care guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put charms on any bracelet?
Only on one with somewhere to hang them, such as links, rings or a bar. A bracelet with the charms already fixed is meant to be worn as it is. A tennis bracelet, for example, is designed to be worn on its own. See how to wear and size a tennis bracelet.
Are charm bracelets still worn?
Yes. The format is flexible: one or two charms on a plain chain reads simple, and a full bracelet reads playful.
