How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home: 3 Easy Ways
Share
Find your ring size at home in a few minutes, with things you already have, and order with confidence. The goal is simple: get the distance around your finger, then match it to a US size. Here are three easy ways to do it, and a chart to read the result.
Before you measure
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers can be a little larger then than first thing in the morning.
- Make sure your hand is warm. Cold fingers read smaller.
- Measure the finger you will wear the ring on. Each finger can be a different size.
- Repeat the measurement two or three times and use the most consistent result.
Method 1: a strip of paper or string
- Cut a thin strip of paper, or a piece of string, about 15 cm (6 in) long.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger and mark where the end meets the strip.
- Lay the strip flat against a ruler and read the length in millimeters. That is your circumference.
- Find the closest number in the chart below.
Method 2: a ring you already own
- Choose a ring that fits the finger you want, and that is not too loose or too tight.
- Measure the inside width of the ring, from one inner edge to the opposite one, in millimeters. That is the diameter.
- Match it to the chart below.
Method 3: a printed ring sizer
If you have a printed ring sizer from another store, you can use it as long as it is printed at 100 percent scale. Check the scale against a ruler before you rely on it.
US ring size chart
- US 6: 51.8 mm circumference, 16.5 mm diameter
- US 7: 54.4 mm circumference, 17.3 mm diameter
- US 8: 57.0 mm circumference, 18.1 mm diameter
- US 9: 59.5 mm circumference, 18.9 mm diameter
- US 10: 62.1 mm circumference, 19.8 mm diameter
If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one for a wide band and the smaller one for a thin band.

Frequently asked questions
What if I am between sizes?
Choose the larger size for a wider band and the smaller size for a thin band.
Does the same size fit every finger?
Not always. Measure the finger you will wear the ring on.
Can I measure with a tape measure?
Yes. A flexible tape measure wrapped around the base of the finger gives you the circumference directly. Read it in millimeters and use the chart.
